For small creatures such as we, the vastness is bearable only through love. After a long day in class with the Nakazawas and just about everything one could ever think of as boring, Root was finally looking forward to getting to his lab, which he called home, and actually working on something that was fun. Fun meaning science. Fun meaning something he was good at. Fun meaning the only thing that kept him going at this point, as he wasn't dating anyone yet, and that anyone was right now in his mind reserved for the one girl he was sure he'd never be able to date. Which meant that his work was the only thing he could live for right now. And when he finished his most important project none of this would ever matter.
He packed up his things and walked to a nearby bus-stop which would ferry him to his lab, or close enough to his lab off campus. He'd shared part of the building with Adrianna Kravenski in particular, who was a fine young woman, who was older than him and yet in a lower year than him. He'd taken this bus often enough and while the ride was not as short as he pleased (he was going to fix that when his teleportation project completed) it was the quickest way to get to his lab.
He opened his notebook as he waited at the bus stop. He was early, as he usually was, and he knew he wasted approximately two thousand minutes annually coming to the bus stop early. However, he wouldn't put all that time to waste. After all, people were supposed to relax occasionally. He could unwind these few minutes before the bus arrived then he'd get back to work. Wendy was with some friends today after school and then she would come by his lab later. After that, Root would bring her to her dorm so she could go to sleep. It was how it happened most days. Usually Root would return to his lab again and work until the morning came and go to class where sometimes he'd sleep through it or just not be happy because he believed it a waste of time. Most of the time he'd ignore the teachers and write in his journal notes for his research, calculations for what he needed to do so when he was at his lab he could conduct his experiments mostly to collect the most data.
Root was reading over his daily notes remembering his day at school when the bus pulled up and Root made his way to where his normal seat - fuck. Someone was sitting there. He stared for a few moments before taking a deep breath and taking an empty seat where he could just be alone for right now. The seat next to him would be the final open seat. Root didn't notice it but in the back, a green haired girl known for unluckiness sat, spelling out trouble for this trip in particular. Just focus on your notes Root. It doesn't matter you didn't get your seat. It's going to be fine. It's just a short trip anyways.

What a throughly disappointing day. This morning had been one where absolutely nothing had gone right. He had the throughly irritating experience of having to go to class without breakfast, having taken a cold, unsatisfactory shower and arriving five minutes late to class. He barely saw Alexia, his conversations with Adrianna were painfully short and all and all he felt like he had accomplished precisely nothing. It would have been a wiser course of action for him to have just stayed in bed and read something.
Thankfully he might be able to salvage something from this awful day. He was going to visit Adrianna at her lab. Maybe he could get a nice dinner, call her, and start to turn this day around.
This hope was soured a bit when he got onto the bus and the last seat had been taken. The trickster was going to have to sit by someone a fact he wouldn't have minded so much any day other then this day in question. He sighed and looked around noticing the Ultimate Unlucky student and cursing under his breath. He took time to close his eyes, gather himself, and pray to the Gods that this trip was not made into a disaster by the presence of this beacon of Bad Luck.
Willow then took a seat close by. The boy he sat by looked familer. Probably the Ultimate Scientist, Root something. After a moment his bad mood succumbed to curiosity. He was the one who lived next to Adrianna right? And it payed to get to know his lady friends neighbors. Especially one with his greasy good looks.
"Hello...Root was it? My name is Willow Fey, we both attend Hope's Peak academy and I believe we have a mutual acquaintance. One Ms. Kravenski." Willow said. Throwing it out there to see how he would react. At the very least he could make the trip into an interesting diversion.

For small creatures such as we, the vastness is bearable only through love. Root didn't even notice when Willow sat next to him. The bus had started driving soon after Willow's arrival. Willow had started speaking and it took a moment for Root to realize that the boy expected a reply. A bit annoyed with having to look up from his notes he was attempting to memorize, even if that was a futile attempt as no matter how much he tried mundane things like meeting new people or what they learned in class today or what homework was assigned would never stick. He almost wished he could just remember a regular normal day without anything really bad happening. He got to remember nothing… just normal, being a normal teenager, even though he knew he got to be, he just didn't remember it at all. Regardless, he still attempted it.
"Yes." It was a simple little answer which Root felt he needed to expand on, seeing as his concentration had been broken by Willow. He wrote down the name 'Willow Fey' and basically noted exactly what Willow had said, he knew Adrianna as well, and he was a Hope's Peak student. "My name is Alexander Root, but you should just call me Root. No Mr. No… honorifics. Just Root." Willow using Adrianna's last name with a Ms., well that meant that he was a guy with manners. A bit like Mariko before she eventually came to terms with how he'd prefer her to address him.
Looking at his notebook for a moment, memorizing the time today he'd seen Mariko in the hall, and thought how pretty she was, Root looked back up and shut his notebook hoping Willow hadn't read anything before he shut it. He rather keep his memory problems a secret, even if there were some who already knew and probably would spread it around the school. He rather not perpetuate the rumor with his actions. "So what do you want, Willow Fey?" A baby started crying. Fucking hell. That was annoying. "It matters not that you know my lab mate. What she does in her free time is not my business."
Secretly, Root hoped Willow wasn't going to insult him. He got enough of that at home and at school. Of course, some of that he'd forgotten, but memories from before… well he was never a popular kid at school. He was the geek, and well, he got into his fair share of fights before and after his memory issues began. Secretly, he was worried Willow was going to be one of those guys who insulted him. If so, he'd also have to looked at Adrianna a bit differently than he had been. Given they knew each other, Root figured the chance was low, of what he knew of Adrianna, but then again, he never understood people well. He could have completely misjudged the blue haired girl. And that was a scary thought.

Willow got a quick glance inside his notebook. Root had recorded down his name and the facts that he was a Hope's Peak student who knew Adrianna. He also saw the bit about finding Mariko pretty. Now the only Mariko he knew was Mariko Nakazawa. Ultimate...something to do with film. Honestly she was a bit too cutesy for his taste. The trickster preferred girls who had a bit of an edge. Preferences aside, it was an interesting piece of information to have. Root seemed to be a chronic journaler, which was usually found in the sentimental types or those with poor memory. Perhaps the scientific facts he knew crowded out his day to day dealings? Or maybe he was merely a more sensitive type and recorded it for the benefit of a physical copy of his memories. Much like others compulsively take photos.
Or he could be recording it for the benefit of someone else. Root wouldn't be the first person he knew who coped with the loss of a loved one by writing messages for them. It was even possible that the bit about Mariko was in code and the true purpose of the journal was to pass it along to some organization that wanted information about Hope's Peak and it's students. A scientist always needed funding after all and there were quite a lot of people who wanted eyes and ears inside the greatest school in the world. Already he was turning out to be a fairly fascinating figure.
"Ah I see. I will keep that in mind. " Willow said. Trying to tune out the dozens of distractions on the bus. He could take this conversation in many different directions if he so wished. A dozen tricks he could run with just the minimal amount of information he knew. He had heard dubious rumors that Mariko's tastes ran more to the female side of the equation. Not particularly likely to be true but it could snap him out of the initial idealization phase if he was forced to think about what she wanted. Still he hadn't observed anything that would indicate his infatuation with Mariko was a problem.
Flirting with Root would be fun. However he had only a little information about the man and he didn't want to make things unnecessarily awkward for Adrianna. While he didn't think that Root was the sort of man who would take out his dislike of Willow's actions (or perhaps an intense interest in Willow's proposal?) out on Adrianna. He didn't know for sure. It was best to play it safe.
"Honestly I am just curious. People fascinate me Root. Which I suppose is fitting for my talent." Willow said. The bus was beginning to make worrying noises. He sincerely hoped that the bus would actually make it to his stop.
"Your her neighbor after all. So I wanted to know what you were like. The mild curiosity people have when for each other when they have mutual acquaintances." Willow paused briefly before continuing to say, "Ms.Kravenski is quite attractive, isn't she?". His tone was even and friendly. He really didn't care what Root said. No matter what he would learn something about Root by how he reacted. The trickster was hardly the jealous type, so he wouldn't care if Root had a fondness for the flower maiden as well. In fact a threesome might be fun to arrange. Maybe even Mariko could join them? Ah but he was getting ahead of himself.
If Adrianna wasn't to his tastes. Well...there was still quite a lot of things to discuss with Root wasn't there? This bus ride might not be completely unsalvageable after all.

For small creatures such as we, the vastness is bearable only through love. Alexander Root was an evolved human being completely above all the animalistic lust and did not depend on the outer appearance of anyone. His chosen mate, if he ever chose one, would be based solely on appearance. Not because he currently was crushing on a cute little green haired girl who had the cutest little smile and - see? He didn't think anything of looks. At all. Of course, the girl he liked was a good looking girl, but that wasn't at all the reason he liked her. Really, he really did like her because of her personality. She was kind and sweet and shy and while she wasn't the brightest in the scientific aspects of knowledge, she was smart in her own way. Otherwise she couldn't be a film director like she was, especially not an ultimate one. There were some talents here that didn't need intelligence, like procrastinator or luck or survivor or various other talents. While he really did enjoy looking at her and he could easily get lost in her eyes, because he believed her to be incredibly cute, he… liked to think that he was evolved past that part of being human.
Even if it was obvious from the above thoughts that he was not.
However, when it came to other girls, Alexander Root occasionally had a wandering eye, but most of the time he was distracted by his work or well, Mariko to really notice. Even with his lab mate Adrianna, he hadn't really thought of her in that way. Until the moment Willow asked. "Wh-What? No. She's just a coworker." However, despite his words, as his mind worked quickly it didn't taken even a second to actually consider Adrianna's looks when it came to… well, attractiveness. Root looked away quickly trying to banish those thoughts from his head. Sure, she was… alright, though compared to Mariko. No, no he couldn't get lost in thinking about her again.
"Hold on Willow. What's your talent?" Root would need to write that down. So he didn't forget again. However, he said that knowing people was part of his talent. It was something Root had never been able to do. He knew that of himself, though he normally didn't really care too much about it… or at least claimed as much. He really did wish he could understand people at times, but normally he amounted it to them being stupid and him being smart. And usually that was alright for him… if he could get over his mother's death and realize that all of this would stay in stone instead of changing it all and not worrying about anything he did right now. Attachments… would only slow him down.

Willow clicked his tongue quietly. Root seemed to be the type who didn't know very much about themselves. People like that tended to go through life frustrated and bitter, pushing people away.
Still he hadn't been too rude. Perhaps he was a true softie inside. The trickster was curious to see. Regardless it was clear that Root did have an attraction to Adrianna of a sort. Which made some interesting possibilities come to mind.
"Just a coworker huh. I've heard that before. "We're just friends", "We're just roomates", "She's just my teacher." One of those was a personal experience. Try to guess which. You should know that you have nothing to be afraid of, if you and Ms.Kravenski hit it off. I am not the jealous kind." Willow said. Currently the engine of the bus was giving strange sounds. Which was worrying to say the least.
"As for my talent..well you could call me this years Ultimate Therapist. If you ever have anything you want to get off your chest..feel free to come to me." Willow said with a smile. The possibilities for this were endless. He wouldn't misuse any trust to blackmail or hurt Root, he just wanted the information for entertainment and to possibly make Root's life a little brighter.
At the very least he could get him laid. The guy really looked like he could use it. Honestly Willow could use it too.

For small creatures such as we, the vastness is bearable only through love. Root didn’t know what to think of this guy. The bus was hot and uncomfortable and yet here Root was talking with him about their mutual… well they both knew Adrianna, even if Root was sure she wouldn't consider him a friend, even if he would like her to, even if he tended to push people away. That was a bit of a problem. Root didn't want to be alone and without friends, and yet he did with the way he acted towards everyone. He wasn't very talkative unless he really wanted to be, or he was around someone he was actually comfortable around. And most definitely he wasn't comfortable right now. Not just because he just met this guy, but the bus was so… loud, and hot and probably the worst ride he'd ever had before.
"No, she's just a coworker. Trust me on that. I have my sights on -" What the fuck was he thinking even about revealing that little tidbit of information. If only he could remember more details about his days, about his life in general, he would be happier at least. Everything was such a blur, and it was slightly frustrating not being able to remember what the girl he liked was wearing one day, or what times he'd ran into her on accident so maybe he could run into her on 'accident' again, but he couldn't if he didn't remember those little details unless he wrote them.
And well, he'd been paranoid lately that someone would steal his notebook and read it. And he'd rather keep most of his private thoughts to himself… plus, it felt like he was a stalker if he wrote it down, though he was sure others did similar things so they could see people they liked and - well he was rambling on about it and trying to defend that he wasn't being that weird having these thoughts. It wasn't like he was going to try to follow her places, just occasionally 'run into her'… Oh god he was weird, wasn't he? "I mean; I do like someone. And it's not Adrianna. She's… uh, not bad, or anything, she's just not -" Root looked away quickly embarrassed at the way he responded to this whole situation. He wasn't used to talking about things like this. Daniel usually liked to talk about games or whatever. Not usually girls Root was around. Or girls in general, because Root wasn't… exactly comfortable talking about girls.
"Don't count on it. I don't need a therapist."
That was the joke of the century.

Willow laughed good-naturedly.
"In my experience everyone could use a therapist, especially the ones who say they don't need one. I bet you keep all your feelings locked up inside. That's not particularly healthy. If not a therapist, you need a confidante of some sort. No man is an island and pretending you are is bound to get you into trouble. Who knows, it might even be the death of you." Willow said with a smile. But for a brief instant he felt as if someone stepped over his grave. It was an odd feeling, a portent of doom.
"This person you have an attraction to. It wouldn't be Ms. Nakazawa would it?" Willow asked. Another terrible feeling that passed fairly quickly. Was this all just a coincidence? Or was the presence of the Ultimate Bad luck allowing his sensitive mind greater access to negative future events? Willow would have to read his divinations carefully tonight, maybe try to build his relationship up with the spirits of Hope's Peak academy.
More worrying sounds from the engine. Willow wondered if Ultimate Bad Luck's misfortune clung to people. A purifying ritual after he was back in his dorm would be in order.

For small creatures such as we, the vastness is bearable only through love. Tch. This guy. What was with him? Didn't he know he couldn't die until he -- Oh right, people didn't know about that. He forgot that it had been awhile and while those in the scientific community may remember when the boy prodigy lost his mother, the general public had probably forgotten. Then again, he didn't let himself get interviewed or appear anywhere in mainstream media because that was what his mom wanted for him even before that happened. Plus, even if someone remembered the event and connected the boy prodigy in science to him, well they probably didn't know that he was working his ass off to save his mother from his own stupid mistake and that he just couldn't move on. If he couldn't do it, what was the point of his intelligence?
Then again, he couldn't blame Willow for not knowing everything about him and how he just couldn't die before his goal was complete. That he wouldn't let himself die before then. He would fight until the point he won. This was the one thing he was determined not to lose. "I'm not going to die just because I don't talk to people. That's the thing that keeps me fighting. Without people I care about, I can do what I need to do." Why was he saying this? Oh probably because he was a bit of a talker when it came down to it. Surprising he didn't insult Willow in the same breath. Ah, well, he's probably saving for next time. After all he knew almost nothing about Willow at this time, so he didn't have much material to work with.
However the instant Willow mentioned Mariko, or at least what he was pretty sure was Mariko, though he could be referring to her sister (which he doubted), Root's face started turning red slightly. Sounds from the engine weren't happy. At all. There were people coughing. There was a really loud baby crying. Some guy was on the phone seeming to shout for no reason. "N-No, that's not i-it at a-all. She and I are just friends." Calm yourself. Well that was particularly hard in such a fucking disaster of a ride wasn't it? "That's right. Just friends. And that's all we'll ever be. How could I ever -" He couldn't even bring himself to say it. He couldn’t even tell himself that he couldn't possibly like Mariko like that. After three years, even if their first year was a bit bumpy with the tutorial sessions, he had discovered that he really liked Mariko and once he used in his head the word love which scared the shit out of him. Not literally, but metaphorically. Partly because that would mean he had some sort of tie to this timeline. The timeline he was going to leave behind.

Willow wasn't expecting such an emotional display, and once again he felt an ominous feeling. He "needed to do" something? It could just be his science, a way to distract himself from a world that scared and disappointed him and made him feel worthwhile. But Willow felt like it might be something deeper. A goal that he needed to accomplish in particular.
"Caring about people is not a weakness. Generally if you have to cut off people to do what you "need" to do, it's usually not something good for you. Or you've had less then exemplary friends. I don't know a lot about you, but Adrianna seems to like you. And I trust her judgement. I want you to be happy. Generally I want people to be happy but with you I have a vested interest." Willow said.
Willow didn't know exactly what to say about his next outburst. Honestly Willow was just going to tease him. However it seemed to catch him in his insecurities. A miscalculation.
"It's alright Root. You'll be fine. I'm sure that you can attract anyone you want to you. Your an intelligent guy and surprisingly attractive." Willow said, giving him the once over. It could be quite fun playing with a guy like Root. It had been a bit since he slept with a guy and he was getting cravings.
"Why don't you Adrianna and I get dinner sometime? You can invite this Mariko girl even, we can make a truly splendid evening of it and-" Willow said, and was suddenly interrupted during his flirty proposition.
The bus had broken down.

For small creatures such as we, the vastness is bearable only through love. This was all Adrianna's fault. Him talking to this guy. This guy trying to make him feel better, but all it was doing was standing in his way. He'd have to have a long chat with Adrianna about her choice in friends. Then again, he obviously wasn't serious about that because he didn't write it down. He was mostly just thinking angrily. Then again, Willow didn't seem like a bad guy. He was just another nice person to him. He didn't understand how anyone could like him. He purposefully made himself prickly like a hedgehog hiding away so people wouldn't like him. Although, he just couldn't prick Mariko with his quills when she was around, unless he tried really, really hard, and he really never wanted to do that. What surprised him even more than Willow proclaiming he wanted Root to be happy was the fact apparently Adrianna called him a friend. And that was something he rarely heard.
"I'll be happy if people would just leave me alone."
It'd been like that since his first year. First the twins wouldn't leave him alone. Then others would pick on him. He just wanted to be left alone, but people just wouldn't let him wallow around in his own depression. They all had to pick at him, poke at his buttons, anger him, or be nice and make Root afraid of getting attached to them. Sometimes it was both, such as in the case of the twins. Nori and Nari were two who annoyed the hell out of him, but honestly, he would have missed them if they didn't return as teachers.
"Tch. You don't have to lie to me about my appearance; I don't worry about it, to give me more time to work, and therefore I don't look clean or nice or tidy or anything like that. I am intelligent, but even I know my personality leaves much to be desired."
FUCK! The bus stopped. It was steaming from the engine. Oh this was just fucking great. Root thought about walking for a second, but he remembered he didn't know the way from where they were to the lab, and the fact his knees would give out if they were too far from the lab. Root ran a hand through his hair and sighed in frustration.
"Oh come the fuck on." Root closed his eyes and rested for a second trying to calm himself down. He didn't know what he would do, though it was probably at most punching the seat in front of him, but he calmed himself down enough to prevent such a physical manifestation of his anger right now. "I appreciate the offer, but I have work to do. I can't get distracted or I will lose precious time working towards my goal."

"You say that, but no human can be happy completely isolated. We are a social animal Root." Willow said simply. The trickster glared at the Ultimate Bad Luck on the bus. Her presence here was probably causing this malfunction.
"A sloppy man has his appeal too. A gruff and rude man with a sensitive side is even more sought after. You would do well with women and men as well. You would even do well with me." Willow flirted. He did always have a thing for people who didn't care too much about what others thought. It must be liberating to be so unconcerned with social norms.
"I have goals as well you know. Taking time out for other things is vital to them. Inspiration often comes during the times you are not thinking about your work after all." Willow said. He sighed. At least this wasn't the worst case scenario. If they got into a bus crash..that would have made for a much worse end to the day.
He still wasn't happy though. By any means. This was seriously annoying in fact.

For small creatures such as we, the vastness is bearable only through love. While it was true that socially, humans sought out others as a need for mental health, due to the original need to band together for survival, thus becoming an instinct, no a need for the company of others. However, while Root knew this was a step in evolution and why humans sought out others, he still believed him better off without it. He liked to think he was evolved past the baser instincts of most humans, something new, a new evolution of mankind, the first evolved human. But he also knew in his heart he was not. He knew that, even if he really wanted it, he could not get away with not hanging around someone at some point. "I'm happy." Of course his tone conveyed the exact opposite. "I'm not like you or anyone else. I want to be alone." Otherwise he'd become too attached or end up causing their death like he did his mother's. Both outcomes were not good. He was already worried about hurting Mariko and they weren't even a couple.
"Tch. I don't have a sensitive side," Root looked out the window. God, they really needed to get moving. The worst came to worst he'd start walking and stop about halfway. But with his luck he'd stop and the bus would zoom on by. Well, luck as in the layman's term for a calculable probability, but it was still just easier to just say luck. "Anyone who liked me would have terrible taste and should get their brain checked for some sort of mental illness, or they are a masochist." He wouldn't understand it at all. After all, he didn't want to get close to anyone. Though, when it came to Mariko he couldn't help but gravitate towards her for some ungodly reason. It was frustrating to like someone so much, you can't even try to be rude to them.
Root scoffed at Willow's next statement. "While you may be right that the mind subconsciously works on a problem while one focusing on something else, that just doesn’t work for me." Root looked down at his journal. No, he couldn't tell Willow about his memory problems. The only way he could make progress was to think faster, and think… in a special way assuming he had written down the previous step and assume he was right until he went over the steps later with a fresh look because he would've forgotten originally doing it. "You and I are very different people, Willow. My mind does not work like yours. I cannot just let it simmer in the back of my head, even if at times I wish it would work. On this matter, it is better if you just trust me when I say relaxing will do the opposite: it would hurt my goal instead of helping it."
