Chiaki had brought around her portable system with her almost everywhere. There was a rare time when she didn't have a game in her hand. Of course, sometimes she forced herself apart from it, but this was not one of those days. As she stared at the corpse in the pool in front of her slowly float down to the bottom of the pool, she really wished she left her game in her dorm today.
…
Four hours ago.
"I've made friends, I think!" Chiaki was on her phone with her mother at the moment. She was tilting her head with utter fascination as she talked to her mom. Apparently she didn't believe her. "Fine, I'll go out again." Chiaki pouted. She just wanted to play her game. However, her mom said if she promised to go out and make more friends today, she'd buy her this brand new system she had been wanting so badly. Of course the school provided equipment and such, but they weren't hers and once she graduated she couldn't keep it. It was so much nicer to own games and systems then just borrow them. It was like knowing you could stream a show on Netflix, but any day they could be taken off, versus having the DVDs of the show and you could watch them any time you wanted no fear of them being taken away. Or at least less of a fear of losing them.
And so Chiaki hung up the phone and tucked it into her pocket. She loaded up her backpack with games and held in her hand a portable game system. Time to go explore.
After she finished this level.
…
Ten minutes ago.
Nearly four hours of walking around playing her game and she hadn't met anyone yet. It was the day off for the week so there weren't any classes, and she'd just not noticed anyone yet. Probably because she was playing her game. Oh! What better place to go than the pool! Tons of people would be there!
…
Two minutes ago.
Chiaki had made it to the second floor pool with only a little diversion due to her losing her way since she was playing her game. Making it to the pool was easy. She didn't change her clothes, as she wasn't planning on actually swimming.
…
One minute ago. Chiaki walked around the pool studying her game, noticing the people here at least this time, but feeling a little scared about walking up to someon -
She lost her foot and barely managed to catch herself. But at a price.
…
Present time.
Chiaki hadn't gotten wet but she was sitting on the ground staring as her game system floated to the bottom of the pool, staring in horror. Her game. Her precious game. No. No. This couldn't be happening. All she could do was stare in horror at the sinking corpse of her game.

Nana had a tough day behind her. Smithing and studying both was difficult for the girl, especially studying. She'd much rather sit behind her anvil all day and just smack things with her hammer.
What better way to cool off after working hard than going for a swim in the pool of Hope's Peak's Academy? Whistling a jolly song to herself, Nana took her bathing suit and wandered to the pool.
She first took off her workwear and changed quickly into the bathing suit, since she couldn't wait to hop into the mostly fresh water.
After that, the girl sprinted out of the changing room and dashed right into the water, jumping in with a running start and yelling "Yee haw!" As she swam, however, she noticed another girl with pink hair staring into the water.
Nana saw that the other girl looked absolutely distraught, and the Blacksmith couldn't have that. She then looked at the sad girl's eyes to see what exactly it was that she was looking for, when Nana herself saw it: a small device in the water.
Well, if it was an electrical device, then Nana was sure that whomever it belonged to could say goodbye to it. Nevertheless, Nana began to dive down to retrieve the object and bring it to the pink-haired girl.
"Here you go!", Nana said. "But you seem down. What's wrong?", she decided to ask.

Chiaki looked in horror. But then someone tried to rescue it. Only she knew it was too late. The life of her game system had flickered out moments ago right before her eyes. It didn't like water, she knew. Water killed it almost instantly. All of her save data. Her favorite game… oh gods she hoped it would still work. The savior brought the device up, but she knew that CPR wouldn't save it. Chiaki looked like she was about to cry. Her best friend, her system which she had owned since she was little was now dead. It was like losing a pet.
She took the system from the savior and hugged it to her chest. "I-I'm fine." She didn't want the savior to think she wasn't happy with her sacrifice to try to save the game. She took a minute and tried to hide her displeasure at the whole incident. "Thank you so much for…" She paused as she thought of the next part of her sentence. "Saving it." Chiaki shot her a smile and tilted her head with a slight giggle. Too bad she didn't save her life before this point or she could just go back. Then again, that wasn't befitting the ultimate gamer. This was just part of the story. Her first step to being the protagonist. The first death which would make her stronger going forward. Even if it hurt.
"My name is Chiaki Namami. I'm the Ultimate Gamer," Chiaki held out her hand to the swimming savior, "I was just playing a game and tripped. I managed to not fall in… but my game wasn't as lucky." She looked down to the system she hugged to her chest sadly for a moment and then beamed back up at Nana. "Thank you so much. I couldn't have gotten it myself. I… don't really know how to swim."

"Oh nooo..." If Nana disliked something, it was sad things. She was thinking if she should hug the girl who introduced herself as the Ultimate Gamer, but then she remembered that she was both in the water and very, very wet.
In order to properly introduce herself, Nana climbed out of the pool and dried off her arms with a towel. She then shook Chiaki's hand.
"I am Nana Kajiya!", she excitedly said. "I am known as the Ultimate Blacksmith! If there's something you need a smith for, I should be the first person you talk to!"
She then looked at the dead device Nana got out of the water. "I am so sorry.", the pink-haired girl with long hair said. "If I had been here earlier, I could have prevented this disaster.", she looked at Chiaki.
The Blacksmith then shook her head. "No.", she spoke. "I can't let this get to me. But it seems to me that you were quite close with this device. Please don't be sad. An end of one thing marks the beginning of another, or something. I read that in a book a while ago."
Nana was shocked when she was told that Chiaki couldn't swim.
"Oh! Is that so? Considering we are alone here currently, how about I teach you? It shouldn't be too bad, I guess."
Nana was hoping that she was gonna make a new friend.

At least now the game system could get the proper burial. Sometimes in her games someone would die and she'd cry, and sometimes they wouldn't even be able to properly mourn the dead character because stuff was still going on. At least for now it seemed that this game was going to be quiet enough so she could mourn her system, unlike in Fable 2, when your dog is killed by that bastard and one doesn't have much time to mourn as one has to continue to fight the bastard, even if one can get the dog back , though Chiaki was upset enough she had stopped playing for a little bit to mourn. She'd make sure to have a proper funeral for her system. She took out her favorite game and tried to dry it off, in the hopes of the game working if it were dry enough later. Hopefully it would and she wouldn't have to buy another one. That would be even sadder. "It's not your fault, Nana… I think," Chiaki said with a slight smile placing the system in her bag away from all the other systems so they didn't get ruined too. "I should have been more careful." Chiaki looked at the game longingly for a minute more. "I will never forget it, and I will not let the sacrifice be in vain. I'll hold the funeral tomorrow in front of the school. You're welcome to join… to join me there." Chiaki's eyes widened when Nana asked to teach her how to swim. Chiaki looked around and swallowed thickly. Oh that would be scary, she thought, but then again, everything was scary. It wasn't as scary as Silent Hill, but it was scary still. Oh she hoped she didn't have chairs appear around the pool while she was in it and have to drown because she couldn't get out. "Okay… I can do that, I think."

Nana continued to look at the device that lost its life not too long ago. She sighed when the other girl talked about the funeral.
"I might attend if I'm not too busy forging something.", she said. "So please don't count on me arriving." She added with a hint of sorrow in her voice.
The blacksmith noticed how the other girl's widened upon her suggesting Nana taught her how to swim.
"Don't worry!", she assured her new comrade. "Both of us are alone in here, and I'll make sure you don't drown, okay? I've got pretty strong arms, so if the worst case scenario happened I could get you out safely. By the way, I don't think I caught your name, did I?"
It was funny how Nana called this girl her friend already and she didn't even know her name or talent. Strange how life works, isn't it?

Chiaki was still a little upset about her game dying. It was so sad. And her new friend said she might not be there. That was even more sad. However, her friend would teach her how to swim. And that was a plus. Okay. No time to be sad. She had to look to the future. Chiaki set her bag down and put her dead system in the bag with everything else, separated enough to not kill the other systems she had.
"Oh! I thought I did! I am so sorry! Chiaki Nanami!" Chiaki held out her hand to the girl. She really hoped they would be friends and Nana wasn't just another NPC walking around with no real impact on the future of her life. Swimming was good and it sounded like she was getting a tutorial finally. That meant things were getting done. She had to learn this skill or she wouldn't be able to do something in the future. She had to learn and build up her stats so she was good to go when the time was right and things wouldn't be so hard to pull off. Who knew? One day she might have to swim away from an island, and hope to not get blown up.
"I'll go get in a swim suit and maybe you can teach me to swim right now!" Chiaki ran off to get in a swim suit before Nana could even reply, changing with such speed and running out in the swim suit. She reached the edge of the pool and stopped. She stared for a moment before she sat down and dipped her feet in the water. "Okay, how does one swim?" She was sure Nana would be her friend and the two could run off on adventures together.
