Chihiro was a bit of a recluse. The first time he had entered his dorm room, back only a few days ago, was unpack his bags, set up his computer, and work. As often as he could, his fingers would be flying across his keyboard as he played quiet music into his earphones. It was only after a particularly long free day that the boy had noticed his stomach was growling. Finally, around mid-afternoon, the programmer poked his head outside his dorm room, before exiting and walking towards the cafeteria, just down the hall. He passed a few of his classmates along the way, timidly waving at them as he continued, until he finally got to the cafeteria, which surprisingly wasn't filled to the brim with students. Just a couple students, likely some people in the kitchen, and a staff member, ready to serve. He quickly ordered some ramen before sitting down at a vacant table with his tray. Giving the rest of the room a quick glance, he sighed. Maybe I should try sitting with the other, He thought to himself. It's not like they're going to be mean or anything.. especially sense I'm dressed like this. His fingers brushed along the side of his dress. Ever since fifth grade, after transferring schools, the programmer had worn a dress, posing, and even passing, as female. Why? Simply to avoid being bullied by his classmates. After all, who would bully a girl for being weak like him? Even so, it hurt Chihiro to hide away, as he did. He shook off the tinge of pain, before starting with his meal. He'll sit with the others next time, right? Chiaki Nanami

Oh her second year at Hope's Peak was going to be so interesting, Chiaki assured herself. Unlike the year before she'd actually be staying in the dorms instead of at home. Of course, as she would soon find out, it would be exactly the same pretty much. However, she wasn't… the most social person, and not because she didn't like people, because she really did, but it was… well she played games all the time and just didn't realize she wasn't socializing with others. Of course, there is also a nasty habit of falling asleep and it wasn't because she was bored or rude, she just… slept sometimes. It was just natural for her. Plus, it wasn't like she had much chances to run around and meet people. She'd been homeschooled since she was little.
Chiaki had set a timer so she wouldn't forget to eat. While the timer went off for a good half an hour before she got up to turn it off, she eventually did get off the floor of her dorm room and turn off her game. It felt so weird, and so Chiaki pulled out a game system so she could walk and play. She'd played this game before, and beat it several times, but it was her favorite game of all and would play it anytime she'd beaten all the games she currently had.
She'd bumped into a guy and didn't even notice when he started yelling at her to watch where she was going, and she just kept walking along, probably making the guy angrier, though he didn't persue… possibly because she was a girl. Regardless, she didn't even realize these events had transpired. When she turned to enter the café, she hit the door frame and snapped out of her concentration for a moment so she could enter the café. She grabbed a tray of food, and played her game in one hand, while holding the tray with the other. Glancing around for a moment, she spotting an empty table. Okay. It wasn't empty but in her defense she didn't see the young programmer with her glance. She ended up sitting right next to Chihiro setting her tray down and finally saving her game, only to notice she just sat next to someone she didn't even know.
"Oh, I'm sorry, I didn't see you. Just sitting next to someone is rude, I think." Chiaki took a moment to think about her next words putting her finger on her chin while she thought, her little pink cat back pack against the back of the chair, filled with other gaming equipment, and a notebook for school stuff. "My name is Chiaki Nanami. It's… a pleasure to meet you."

He may not look like it, but Chihiro tended to be a little impatient when it came to his work at times. The programmer had only slurped up a few strands of his noodles before he pulled out a PDA from his shirt pocket. Only he would leave his phone on his desk in favor of a PDA, it seemed. Bringing out his stylus, he started to tap away, continuing what he had left on the small device. Every minute or so, he'd set the device a couple feet away from him to continue his meal, making extra sure not a single drop of broth got on the device. After a moment of prodding at his ramen, his eyes glanced up just in time to see the pink-haired girl bump into the door frame. It luckily didn't seem like anybody else noticed the blunder, and he wasn't the sort to laugh over that sort of thing, so he averted his gaze, trying to refocus on the PDA. And, to his surprise, he noticed the time on the device. It definitely didn't feel like it, but around fifteen minutes had passed since he got his tray, which would explain why his noodles had been cooling down “so fast.” Sighing, he turned off his device, slipping it back into his shirt pocket, before picking up his chopsticks. Once again, his eyes glanced up to see the girl again, who was now multi tasking between playing some game on a pink Vita and making sure her meal wasn't being fed to the ground. Chihiro was going to return to his meal, until he noticed that she was heading straight for him. And, before he knew it, she just sat next to him, not even paying him a glance. That was, until she turned the game she had been playing off, looking up. "Oh, I'm sorry, I didn't see you. Just sitting next to someone is rude, I think." She had spoken to him, her voice seeming soft. Chihiro was a bit startled when she sat next to him out of the blue like that, but he relaxed when she spoke again, introducing herself. She seemed to just have an aura of kindness. "Ah.. uhm…" His mind blanked for a moment, before shook his head a little, getting the mental cobwebs off of him. "S-Sorry.. My name is Chihiro Fujisaki. It's nice to.. To meet you too." He stuttered a bit, and apologized for pausing. The meek boy always found it harder to introduce himself to girls, especially since he started presenting as one. He gripped the left side of his dress, feeling a bit nervous. Well, really nervous, which was unfortunately clear as day. Chiaki Nanami

Oh no. It was rude. The girl she had sat next to was nervous and was stuttering. She didn't want to make anyone sad or upset or worried or anything like that. She wanted to make everyone happy and smile all the time. She had to figure out a way to make this new person happier, but she also didn't want to move. It was the only way she met people, by running into them. And… and… Their names were similar! They were both Chi's! Chi's united! It was destiny for them to be best friends. It had to be. It was like in a game when a story scene went on and you didn't actually control the character. This was part of life, her life, was written in stone, it was part of her story. The story line of the most epic game she'd ever play and it would end eventually, but this was one she would love to not finish before she finished everything. It was like all the games she played was preparing her for exploring the game of her life.
The protagonist wouldn't slink away from this. The protagonist would make friends. Perhaps this friend would be like her partner throughout her fight, or whatever the story was, her friend she would know and trust. The only way she would know that for sure was if she tried to make friends. If she didn't run away and just lock herself in her room like she had in the past. She had to face everything head on.
"Oh, we should shake hands!" Chiaki said as she held her hand out. That was how people greeted each other when they first met each other. It was the polite thing to do, she thought. After all people did that all the time in her games. "I'm the SHSL Gamer. I play games all the time." She might as well better introduce herself at the very least.

If there was one thing that seemed so unbearably constant to him, it was that Chihiro wasn't very good with social situations. Meeting and conversing with brand new people, going out and doing 'fun' stuff, all of that was just a tad bit difficult. Even when he had time to prepare, and boost himself up for approaching someone and chatting with them, he'd still be a bit nervous.
That's why, when this frankly cute girl just up and sat next to him out of the blue, without warning, the programmer's words caught in his throat a bit more than usual.
After a couple of long, silent moments, he started messing with the cuffs of his uniform jacket. Was she.. staring at him? He wasn't imagining that, right? Those fuscia eyes just seemed to pierce into his for a long moment. Was she just lost in a thoughtful daze? He did that sometimes. It always made him feel awkward.
Before Chihiro could speak up, the girl next to him suddenly spoke up again. "Oh, we should shake hands."
And, just like that, Chiaki suddenly extended her hand out, waiting for him to reach his own out. Ah, yeah, that's what people did when they met each other. The boy reached his hand out, a bit timidly at first, before grasping hers ad shaking it. The girl then introduced her talent.
Gamer? Well that did seem to make sense. If his nose wasn't commonly buried in his PDA, or some other small device, Chihiro might have thought the girl would bump into someone easily as she walked in, playing her game. But nope. And that made perfect sense, considering her talent was literally gaming.
Actually, that revelation made him smile, just a bit. Thank god! It was a bit comforting knowing she was also a computer NEEEEERRRRRRRDDDD. Just a NEEEEERRRRRRRDDDD of a different caliber. Still, he'll take it!
"Ah, you're a gamer?" Returning his hand to his side, he was thankful that her shake was soft. Some people, especially guys, seemed to pride themselves with having handshakes so strong, they could break your hand. "W-Well, that's cool! I, uh, I'm the SHSL Programmer. I don't normally program games, but.. You know." Did she? Well, to be fair, he played games too. Sometimes.

Chihiro was so cute! They could run around and do girl things like in those games she played. Maybe she could have a 'best' friends with the fellow female! It wasn't every day she met a fellow girl, let alone someone who like games and stuff like that. She didn't know much about programming, though she had dabbled a little bit into programs especially since some games required it, and she once wanted to make a game too, but she never had a good story to tell. Maybe she could turn the game that was her life into a game everyone else could play too! When she died, then someone could complete it for her! Then she would forever play her game and so many people would play it too! Oh that sounded so cool. She wanted people to enjoy her life as much as she did.
Taking Chihiro's hand Chiaki smiled so big that it almost looked like her face would rip apart from it. Oh she was so happy. She could see it now! They would go on big adventures together. They would have so much fun. Maybe her life was a mystery game, and Chihiro was her cute friend who helped her out when she needed it! Oh Chihiro was obviously super smart and she would help her if she got stuck. Though Chiaki was sure that her life was a game of all sorts of types. The mixture of an ultimate game, the best game she would play, she was sure. Plus, it'd be her last game to play too… Unless someone was playing her game right now and forgot to play a game before, and would go back the next time they played to play that game. Oh that sounded so great. All of the games!
"Oh that's really cool! I mean, I've never built a game, but I want to. I want everyone to play my life! You see, we're currently in a game, I know this to be true, and I want my game to be a game within a game, like Balloon Fight inside of Animal Crossing for the Gamecube! I want everyone to be able to play the game I'm in right now inside the game I'm in! It's like… forever repeating and everything! Wouldn't that be so cool?"

This girl.. This SHSL Gamer by the name of Chiaki Nanami. She was kind of freaking him the heck out. The gamer, at first glance, seemed like a very mellow girl, who simply drowned time behind a scream for hours on end, kind of like him. But as soon as the brunette dropped that his talent was programming, she suddenly flared in excitement faster than he had likely ever seen. The way she suddenly grabbed his hand invoked a tiny, involuntary yelp from Chihiro.
Oh my god, a girl was holding his hand. Not like the handshake they did mere moments ago, no. This was legitimate, one sided hand holding. He almost felt compelled to apologize for it, too. For a couple moments, the programmer's mind blanked. He hadn't quite grasped what was happening yet, and when he finally regained his senses, Chiaki was already well into her tangent about how this world was a game. After she finally finished, he paused for a moment, worrying his hand was going to become clammy.
"..." Externally, his wide eyes and blank face must have looked kind of cute. Internally, however, he was really struggling to find a single word to reply with. "W-Well.. Uh. Uhm. Do you b-believe in the simulation hypothesis, th-than?" Jeez, that's where he was going, huh? That little idea really did unnerve him. The boy once felt bad because one of his Sims was having a bad day, so the idea that some god computer whiz was running billions, maybe trillions of life forms in a massive computer was just scary.
"I uhm.. Well, I d-don't really make games very often. Sometimes for fun, but.. I've been p-pretty busy with a project, recently." He was about to ask if she could let go of his hand, but backpedaled on that because it might be rude.

Simulation hypothesis? She remembered that from one of her games she'd played before! It was similar to how the game Steins;Gate that came out a year ago started. It claimed that the player was the one in the game not the game people. It was so interesting! It was how she had always thought, except for the fact that the people in the game were in their own game. It was like an overlapping game inside a game that went on forever. That wasn't exactly the simulation hypothesis, but it was similar.
Dropping Chihiro's hand, seeing it was a wrong move after the yelp the young girl gave, Chiaki's face lowered for just a moment. "Sorry I just got so excited." Chiaki then looked up at Chihiro with a smile and tilted her head, resting her hands on her backpack straps. She hoped she wasn't going to scare the pretty girl off. She was already too excited to be her friend. She didn't have many friends, and people she met were always nice to her, but they didn't hang out with her like friends were supposed to do. "To answer your question, yeah! We're all in a game… I think. I mean, that's all life is for me. I love my games, and I want to be in one too so everyone can enjoy my life. I've had so much fun. Everyone should be able to enjoy it too. There are times I can almost hear the music playing. We can't tell just like people in our games can't tell they're in a game. I know I'm in a game. I just know it. What else is there?"
She really hoped Chihiro didn't think she was weird or anything like that. She didn't want to upset her, but at the same time, she really was happy. She didn't want this girl in front of her to not like her. She just really wanted to be friends. She didn't know if she was doing well or not. She didn't know Chihiro very well and so she couldn't predict her actions. "Oh? A project? What's it about? Is there anything I can do to help?" She was really curious as to what Chihiro could be doing, she wanted to help too. She really wanted to make Chihiro happy and do like friends were supposed to do!

It was an odd belief, thinking the world was a video game. Did Chiaki believe in some strange variation of solipsism, where she was the protagonist of a video game, with everyone else being NPCs, or was this some sort of MMO.. Though the light haired boy had a bit of trouble understanding her, he found her as a curious sort of interesting person. Besides, he really had no right to think someone else was weird.
"W-Well, uh.. Maybe. I never thought of anything that w-way, I suppose." With an awkward chuckle, he felt his frame begin to relax. They were.. making good conversation! The tenseness he felt when she sat next to him had finally started to dissipate. Leaning into his tray, he took a small bundle of noodles into his mouth. This was way better than the stuff he'd eat on work binges.
However, his meal enjoyment halted a bit as soon as she asked him about his project. The question caught Chihiro so off guard that he swallowed a bit early. Going into a small coughing fit, he held his chest, trying to get his bearings.
"S-Sorry.. That caught me off g-guard.." The boy spoke, between coughs. Never in his life had he choked on noodles. This was truly a new low. "Uh.. I shouldn't have mentioned it.. J-Just don't tell anyone.. I don't want it getting out but.. It's a.. uh.."
It wasn't like it was the biggest secret he had, but such an important project.. Well, it'd be bad if everyone in the school knew about it. The last thing he needed was being called the harbinger of skynet, or something of the sort.
"Artificial Intelligence.. s-smart, not like a chatbot, or something..."

That's because people inside games weren't supposed to know they were inside games. Chiaki was just special, she knew. That was exactly how it was supposed to be. Chihiro was just a normal, pretty girl who was blissfully unaware of the game they were in. And how each play through one of them could die at any moment but next play through they could live. Or perhaps it was destiny that every play through someone would die, but one should also remember all that time they spent before they died every time someone play through the game. The thing with her belief was that they all had their own minds, created by someone else within a game, sometimes looping around to a game created by someone in a game and eventually the original game was created by a child game, that sort of thing. All the worlds were interconnected to her. Her mind was just like Chihiro's, her mind was just like everyone else's, and they were real, but they were also all stars in a video game of their own. That also meant everyone in videos were also real people in a sense as well they were all as real as she or young Chihiro here.
"Oh no! I'm so sorry! I shouldn't have surprised you like that!" Oh no, she felt so bad even if Chihiro was the one apologizing first. Chiaki knew she shouldn't have done it. That was obviously not the right choice. Oh her player in another game should be sad too. Such a cute girl and she made the wrong choice. The social parts of games she failed at, especially the dating sim parts. But at least this wasn't probably a dating sim part, Chiaki thought. She looked up thoughtfully a finger on her chin, thinking of these thoughts before looking back at Chihiro with a smile.
"Oh! So like you and me but you're created it! That's so cool. Maybe you'll end up having a son or a daughter all by yourself! Normally people need help with making babies, but if you could do it by yourself, that would be so cool! Computers and technology is amazing, and expands the limits of the world itself!" Chiaki was so happy. It was so cool that Chihiro was working on an AI of her own. She'd be the first mother of someone without a father that she knew about in this world at least.

That comment Chiaki made, on how normally, people needed "help" to have a child, wasn't really doing Chihiro any favors in terms of his social skills at that table. Pretty much the second she said that, his face burst from it's pale color to a light pink. His eyes drifted away, not daring to look at the girl after she said such a thing.
Though, in a way, she wasn't wrong. Alter Ego... in a lot of ways, he is the child of Chihiro. Just not the normal kind of child. It was almost like a human example of asexual reproduction.. That analogy wasn't doing him any favors, either. Keeping his eyes off in the distance, he spoke, timidly as always.
"Well, you're not wrong.. uh, I've been working on him for years now, and I think.. Well, he almost acts as if he's a human, by now. It's actually.. r-really amazing."
And, though he couldn't say it, that A.I could potentially play part in somethig even greater.. He hoped. The Ultimate Programmer had already solved the problem of giving an A.I a "soul." So, in reality, anything was possible.
"A-Actually.. Maybe sometime later, I c-can show you him.." He looked back over to gamer, rubbing the back of his head in a gesture of awkwardness. "B-But, know he's not complete yet.. a-and you have to keep him a secret.. Please."

Secret. Secret. There was one thing Chiaki was really good at that wasn't video games and that was keeping secrets. She played games where she had to keep secrets and learned how to cope with not telling people secrets in those games. She liked this programmer girl a lot and so she would keep any secret, especially when it involved something as cool as a Chihiro making her own baby! Maybe one day she would have a baby and their kids could play and have fun and run and play hide and seek.
Then again, she'd have to get someone to help her make the baby, and really, if she had to pick right now she had two people in mind for helping her make a baby, and one of those, in a few days she would end up kissing. Well, either way, she wanted to have a kid someday anyways, and the kid would be so cute. Alter Ego, as Chihiro called him, would love her kid! They would be best friends like she and Chihiro might someday be! Oh wouldn't it be so cool if their kids fell in love? Then she and Chihiro could be sisters!
"Uh huh! I promise to keep him a secret. Oh, it'll be so cool when everyone gets to see him though. I can't wait. But I promise not to tell anyone about him until you're ready to let him out into the world," Chiaki agreed with a smile and a nod. Of course, she didn't know why no one could know about him, but she figured it had something to do with the fact he wasn't ready and Chihiro had to protect her son from the world right now. Plus, they were high schoolers. Girls had a problem in high school if they had kids before they graduated. So there was probably that stigma towards it as well. Oh well, she would keep her secret. It was like a pinky swear or a girl code swear or something like that. This was so exciting!
