Everyone wants a magical solution for their problem, yet everyone refuses to believe in magic. Kaneko never had any trouble when she had to move to Hope's Peak Academy. It pained her a lot to close down the shop in her hometown, but she thought that the prestigious school would be a great way to make cash. There was also the possibility of buying rare or unusual objects from others.
Nevertheless, after she got accepted at Hope's Peak Academy, she picked out a place where she thought she could get the most customers. Although it wasn't a laboratory like a Scientist would have, it'd allow her to put her talent to the test. So she entered her new domain and began to set everything up.
...
After several hours, Kaneko was finally finished with sorting her inventory and putting everything on display. The shop had a holiday section, where she sold decorations for various holidays, such as Christmas, Easter and Halloween. That section had regular sales all year long, up to 50% off any item if it wasn't the season yet.
Then there was the food section along with the magazine section. By their lonesome, these two sections weren't that big. Just a few snacks and not a lot of magazines. Lewd magazines were there too, but they were behind the counter. She wouldn't sell them to minors anyway.
There were also sections for baths and showers, for board and video games, general decorations and finally a small machine which let customers print out photos for a very small price.
Kaneko herself was behind the counter and made some signs so that people would be interested in spending money there. She hung them outside the store. One sign said 'Open.', with the word 'Closed.' on the sign's backside. A second sign said 'Open from Monday to Friday 8 AM to 8 PM.' and a third said 'Don't try to steal. The consequences will be severe. Trust me.'
Now, she waited for her first customer in order to greet them with a smile and the sentence 'Welcome! How may I help you today?'. She hated doing it, but it was the best way to get someone to do business with her. As long as nobody attempted chit-chat, it'd be fine. Words: 368 | Tag: @username | Notes: notes

Suzaku sighed. Fucking hell. He was going to have to go out and interact with people wasn't he? Fucking hell. Fucking Hell. Fucking hell.
The fanboy knew he had to do it. I mean he couldn't just avoid everyone forever could he? Still the temptation to just load himself down with food and beverages from the vending machines and bunker down in his room was very strong. It also wasn't very healthy.
Suzaku needed food and basic supplies. The concept of heading down to the cafeteria and possibly encountering students who wanted to talk to him was too distressing right now. He had just fucking gotten to this school after all. Baby steps were important. First things first go to a convenience store. Yeah. He did that all the time back in the day. People didn't bother you much there. It was just a simple transaction. Suzaku could get what he wanted and avoid falling into old habits.
He sure took his time getting there though. He practically shuffled and dragged his feet. Suzaku had probably done this a hundred times when he was younger and yet here he was, afraid that...what? Some convenience store owner was going to tear into him for no reason? Why would that ever happen? And since when did he become such a fucking coward anyway?
Suzaku walked into the first convenience store he saw with his head down. He quickly moved to the food section and grabbed a couple things he liked: Chips, soft drinks, some microwavable stuff. Took a random shounen magazine off the rack, and glanced over the video games (everything he either had, wasn't interested in, or was out of his price range at the moment) and headed to the counter. He had more he needed but he didn't want to dawdle for long. He would just check out the next convenience store.
Then he saw who was behind it.
Fuck. Fuck. Fuck.
That was someone who attended HPA. Out of all the convenience stores in Tokyo, this was the one he had to walk into? Fucking really? Did God really hate him that much?
He froze for a couple moments. They seemed like an eternity but they could only have been seconds. Then he composed himself. Maybe she wouldn't recognize him, or wouldn't care, or didn't want to talk. That was possible right?
He fumbled for the correct amount and set it down on the counter, with sweaty, shaky palms.
"This...should just about cover it right?" Suzaku said. His voice sounded a bit tense but he was holding up surprisingly well. Still he couldn't even look in her direction, so he found himself staring at a wall. He was such a fucking idiot.
Whatever. He had no choice but to wait for her response anyway.

Everyone wants a magical solution for their problem, yet everyone refuses to believe in magic. Kaneko closely followed the fellow that entered her store with her eyes, to make sure he wasn't going to be a dirty thief. The boy looked like he wasn't doing well, but it's not like Kaneko cared that much.
The shopkeeper then counted the change, and was content that it was the correct amount of money he brought. Although she found it strange he didn't look at her, she still put on her fake, but charismatic smile.
"Thanks for your business.", she said. "Please come again." Words: 86 | Tag: @username | Notes: notes

It was...really as simple as that? God damn, that was a lot simpler than he imagined. Suzaku must really be an idiot. She probably didn't even recognize him.
He was going to have to thank the gods for this one. The Fanboy really should visit his Aunt and Uncle's shrine and leave an offering. Now that he was a student at Hope's Peak he was unlikely to deal with disappointed looks in anyone's eyes. And they had always been kind to him.
Whatever. He would have to think about doing that later, right now he needed to get the hell out of dodge.
"Thank you." Suzaku said with a small bow. Then he took his newly bought goods and left. Feeling relieved and perhaps just a bit more confident.
Why couldn't he have seen how trivial this all was? What could he possibly have been so frightened of? In the end the shopkeeper hadn't been a particularly scary person had she? On the internet he dealt with people giving into the darkest aspects of themselves all the time. Boldened by anonymity people could misbehave in any way that they wanted without fear of reprisal or risk to their reputations. Suzaku dealt with that bullshit all the time. Yet the world of masks, etiquette, politeness and face to face social interactions was a nightmare for him.
He sighed. Something in him was broken. That much he knew. He just wished, for once and only in this capacity, to be normal.
Still in the end he had made it through hadn't he? Suzaku was still breathing and nothing had gone wrong. The sun was shining and he had made his parents proud while doing what he loved more then anything else on earth.
This feeling...could only be hope. It still had it's novelty for him, he hadn't quite felt anything like hope for a long time. Then he got that acceptance letter from Hope's Peak and everything changed. The future looked full of possibilities he hadn't truly considered in years.
Suzaku stopped and sat on a bench near the store. Soon he would have to find another store and finish getting his supplies and head back to his dorm. Right now though he needed to take his breath, check his various accounts and maybe post an update on his blog. He took out his phone and went to work, oblivious for the moment, of the entire world.
(OOC: I am leaving this a bit open for the moment. Someone can post finding Suzaku on the bench and rope him back into the thread if they want. Otherwise Suzaku probably sits on the bench for 10-15 minutes before leaving.)

Why does Hope's Peak do this to Taro?
Every single week he gets hit with a new "survival test" where he gets thrown into another life and death situation to see how he survives.
This week it was malfunctioning oven that blew up in his face while trying to make some tatter tots. He can't even enjoy them now.
He went down to Kaneko's shop for basics.
"Hey Kaneko. Me again. My sunglasses got destroyed again and I'm out of that cream you gave me for burns. Do you have anymore?"

Everyone wants a magical solution for their problem, yet everyone refuses to believe in magic. Kaneko saw that one boy walk out with what he bought and saw another come in. Looking closely, she recognized him as the SHSL Survivor.
Her professionality keeping her mouth from frowning, Kaneko politely pointed him towards the sunglasses and the burn cream.
"The items you are looking for are there, and there.", she said. "Depending on how many you want to purchase, a single set of sunglasses and the cream would set you back 2500 yen."
Although she was still wearing her smile, her eyes would follow Taro as he walked around the shop. If he attempted anything in her store, Kaneko would have to convince herself that Taro really was the SHSL Survivor.
Because Kaneko would have no problems with snapping a neck or two.
